In Skulduggery Pleasant, Scepter of the Ancients, we meet young Stephanie Edgely, who's always wanted there to be something more to the world than she sees....and is thrilled to discover magic and more through Skulduggery Pleasant, living, breathing, fire-throwing skeleton mage. Stephanie is presented as a stubborn, curious, and very different girl exploring a fascinating new world. Skulduggery Pleasant is full of humor, adventure, magic, and character. With pithy one-liners and witty dialogue, Landy presents the characters of his series for our pleasure and begins to introduce some of the dark secrets that are hidden in this new world.
In Stephanie and Skulduggery's second adventure, Playing With Fire, Stephanie begins to realize what she's getting into - and that she might not ever get out. Characterization gives way to plot, as the cast we met in the first book begin to fall into place in a complex and beautifully arranged series of heart-stopping events. The third installment, The Faceless Ones, is pure action. We know the characters, we know the plot, and it's time for stuff to happen! Stephanie, now firmly ensconced in the magical world as Valkyrie Cain, hardly remembers her old life and family. Her mirror reflection has taken over her role as normal daughter....but she doesn't have time to think about that. Nobody really has time to think about anything, because they're in a desperate struggle to survive the coming invasion of Faceless Ones, the ancient gods. There's betrayal at every corner and Skulduggery's trademark humor has a dark flavor. Valkyrie continues to ignore the grim hints and expostulations of Skulduggery's friends and refuses to return to her ordinary life, even when she knows she may not survive. Heart-stopping action peppered with grim humor leads up to a startling conclusion that's not altogether unexpected. There's still plenty of unexplained secrets drifting about and readers will be waiting hungrily to find out Valkyrie's next move.
Verdict: Recommended for fans of Harry Potter, fast-paced adventure fantasy, and anybody else who might like to read about fire-throwin' skeletons!
