Preschool Interactive: Letter Knowledge

[Notes and Responses 12-5-12: Everyone was back - with new folks - this week. The weather really is not cooperating and I may have to decree that all snow storytimes be postponed to January. I didn't read Duck Skates and I abridged Guardian Team]

Dancing time and name tags: "The tempo marches on" on Jim Gill sings Do Re Mi on his Toe Leg Knee

Introduction, welcome, and announcements: Messy Art Club holiday decorations tomorrow, sign up for Santa's Kitchen.

Early Literacy Theme: Letter Knowledge is knowing the same letter can look different, that letters have names and are related to sounds.

Opening name song: The more we get together

Long story: The fox in the dark by Alison Green

Movement: It is snowing by Jean Warren

Nonfiction: The guardian team by Cat Urbigkit

Movement: Five little penguins

Early Literacy Aside: Books with short, simple sentences are good ways to introduce letters and sounds. Easy readers like Elephant and Piggie and the Berenstain Bears make good read-alouds as well as introducing letters.

Short story: Kitten's winter by Eugenie Fernandes

Short story: Duck skates by Lynne Berry

Closing song: Sunny Day

Process art: Beading

Prep: Beads, pipe cleaners

Kids string beads on the pipe cleaners. Make bracelets, necklaces, snakes, or other creations.

Thank you for attending today's Preschool Interactive!

Our early literacy skill was: Letter Knowledge, knowing the same letter can look different, that letters have names and are related to sounds.

You can practice this skill at home by reading books together! Ask your listeners to point out letters and sounds as you read stories. Picture books are great for this, especially books that have differently-shaped text.

Our stories today included:
The fox in the dark by Alison Green
The guardian team by Cat Urbigkit
Kitten's winter by Eugenie Fernandes
Duck skates by Lynne Berry

Our songs and rhymes included:
It is snowing http://tinyurl.com/b7vsffz
Five little penguins http://tinyurl.com/7t2o2oe

More stories and songs to try at home:
Look for holiday stories under the tree in the children's section. Don't forget to check the nonfiction area for more stories about animals and winter!

Our take home craft is: Snowflakes

You will need: Decorations
Decorate or color your snowflakes and hang them from the ribbons. They make great tree or window decorations!
