- Notes and Respones, January 16, 2013: I cut Trudy a bit short as the kids were getting wiggly. This book really only works as an opening book with lots of patient kids because not much happens in the book or the pictures, but I do love the artwork anyways. I skipped Mr. Penguin, in the interests of not throwing up on the kids with that much wiggling. Sneezy was checked out and didn't come back in time, so I used two of my new lift-the-flap books instead, Britta Teckentrup Animal 1 2 3 and Simms Taback's Farm Animals. This meant there wasn't time for Kate Messner's Over and Under the Snow (well, sort of time, but I really felt bad and just wanted to end it at that point). Had a decent group - about 25, which means at least 15 kids, even though 4K is now 5 days a week, flu is going around, and it was freezing cold.
- Notes and Responses January 11, 2012: Yay! Everyone came back and we had 35 people! Much love for our new dancing song, "Samantha the Butterfly". I was out of budget when it was released - and it wasn't available on Amazon, so I bought a copy for myself and am generously lending it to the library for storytime! Under the Snow worked much better with this crowd, although there were so many kids that I ended up moving around a lot so they could see the pictures and just kind of making up the words.

Our early literacy skill was: Narrative Skills, which is expressive language, including being able to describe things, to tell events in order, and to retell stories.
You can practice this skill at home by using simple props to tell stories. You don't need fancy flannel or puppets - popsicle sticks, paper, and tape make great puppets, or check out the library's collection of toys, which include book and puppet/stuffed animal combinations.
Our stories today included:
Trudy by Henry Cole
Under the snow by Melissa Stewart

If you liked our penguin song, try making up your own rhymes to go with the tune of "If you're happy and you know it" you'll be amazed at how easy it is! Some of our other favorites include Mr. Turkey, and Mr. Crocodile.
