RA RA Read: Laugh 'n' Read, Funny Beginning Chapter Books

Every age and reading level loves humor, but it can be hard to find funny books for those kids just getting into chapters. Even at a young age, humor is a very individual thing, but these are some series and individual titles that I've found have a wide appeal to kids reading beginning chapters.

Beginning Chapter Book Series

Down Girl and Sit by Lucy Nolan
The best come first! Follow two clueless dogs (they think their names are Down Girl! and Sit!) through a series of hilarious adventures at home and on vacation. These are not only the funniest things you will ever read, they also teach kids about perspective and narrative voice. They're my go-to titles for reluctant readers and those just getting into chapters.

Boris by Andrew Joyner
This series is part of Scholastic's Branches series, books that fall right between easy readers and beginning chapters. The Boris series is lightly humorous with a sweet touch, telling about the every day adventures and imagination of a warthog named Boris.

Notebook of Doom by Troy Cummings
This is another Branches series, although a slightly higher reading level. A boy moves to a new town and encounters lots of silly/scary/gross stuff. It's Captain Underpants type humor but with a scary twist.

Roscoe Riley by Katherine Applegate
This is a typical "misadventures at school" beginning chapter series, but I have found kids laugh hysterically and these are a favorite book club choice for us.

Dory Fantasmagory by Abby Hanlon
I admit that I was a little doubtful about this new series, featuring a little girl with a big imagination, but kids love them and I've come to enjoy them also. They're full of imaginary (and not so imaginary) friends and adventures.

Princess in Black by Shannon and Dean Hale
Both boys and girls equally love this series about a prim and proper princess who transforms into....the Princess in Black!

The Yeti Files by Kevin Sherry
The yetis are a big family and they're there for each other even when they're being chased by mad scientists and getting into all sorts of adventures and problems. This is a graphic blend, mostly graphics.

Individual Titles

Mammoth Academy by Neal Layton

This falls into the Captain Underpants style of humor. The mammoths are enjoying a carefree (if smelly) life at the academy when they discover...humans! This is a more advanced chapter book, slightly over 100 pages.
