Read, Read, Read, said the Baby: I love my tutu too! by Ross Burach

Ross Burach has done a wide range of early readers and picture books, all with a goofy sense of humor. This latest offering is a board book series, "A never bored book" and includes an array of cute animals, fluffy tutus, and some vigorous wordplay.

The pudgy penguin on the cover reappears on the first page, showing off ONE tutu. It is joined by a bear, ant, toucan, and more animals, counting up the number of tutus and all proclaiming their love for those fluffy accessories. The rhymes proliferate, as they call in a "gnu with a new tutu" whose phone number is a series of 2s. When a sad elephant wishes for a tutu, another friend shows up with extras to share and the story ends happily with all the creatures dancing in their ten tutus.

No gender is designated for the animals, not even the long eyelashes = female shortcut, and they're an array of bright colors, some with and some without clothes, all enjoying the delight of a snazzy tutu.

This is sweet and tongue-twisting text hilarious and just crying to be read out loud and fast, but my only concern is that the age range for board books don't have the letter awareness to really pick up the humor in the wordplay, other than the fun repeats of the "tu" sound.

Verdict: If you read board books aloud in storytime or have an older audience than infants and toddlers, this is one to consider.
