Good dog: Home is where the heart is by Cam Higgins, illustrated by Ariel Landy

Bo, a fluffy black and white puppy, loves his farm home. He especially loves playing in the mud! But when he gets a bath (also lots of fun!) When Wyatt and Imani give him a bath, he's very upset when he finds his tag is missing and travels all over the farm, talking to friendly (and not-so-friendly) animals in his quest to find it.

This is a very simple, easy to read story. It's equivalent to a level 3 or 4 easy reader, but in chapter book format - it would go along well with an Acorn book. The charcoal illustrations are sweet and it's nice to see a Black family in a rural setting.

Bo is a cheerful and friendly character. He has little adventures - meeting the mean cats, chats with the pig in the mudhole, and brushes with the wild animals too - as he travels around the farm and searches for his tag. He tackles his fears when he goes up into the attic and meets new friends - spiders - who aren't as scary as he thought they were. The story ends on a cheerful note with room for more adventures with Bo.

Verdict: Hand to readers who are ready to advance beyond Biscuit but aren't quite ready for the many, many animal-themed chapter books out there. This will be especially popular in my rural area as kids will enjoy recognizing familiar animals and scenery. Recommended.
