My wild life: Adventures of a wildlife photographer by Suzi Eszterhas

I love Suzi Eszterhas' wildlife books and they're favorites among my patrons as well, for their delightful pictures and simple, accessible prose. Now Eszterhas takes us behind the scenes of her life as a wildlife photographer.

Each spread is its own little section, starting with Eszterhas' childhood love of animals and then moving into the daily challenges of wildlife photography, from living rough to being patient. She talks about learning from the local people, working with wildlife organizations, and is honest about the challenges and difficulties of her job as well as the rewards. A final spread is a question and answer section with tips for kids, especially girls, who want to be wildlife photographers.

Of course, the book is full of wonderful animal photographs, interesting tidbits, and funny stories. I loved that Eszterhas was honest about the difficulties of her job, from low pay to challenging sexism, as well as the beautiful animals and cute babies. She talks about being dirty and peeing in a bottle, getting to hold and raise animals, and her work with wildlife foundations.

Verdict: This is just enough information to intrigue and interest kids, with lots of practical tips on following their dreams, especially for girls who want to break into male-dominated arenas. I especially liked that she gave advice to kids who don't have or can't afford cameras or phones. This would work well in your picture book or nonfiction section and is a great choice for kids who love animals, are interested in working with them, or to add to a collection of women in STEM-related careers. Recommended.
