Small Readers: Truth or Lie: Sharks! by Erica S. Perl, illustrated by Michael Slack

This is an interesting format for an easy reader and pretty funny too. The book is narrated by the "Truth Sleuth" a red stamp that stamps the false statements "LIE." After a brief introduction, the reader is given 4 statements about an aspect of sharks, illustrated with Slack's silly cartoons. Turn the page and the false statement is exposed as a lie, sometimes with the true facts illustrated by photographs, sometimes by Slack.

Readers will learn about baby sharks, shark skin, skeletons, fins, teeth, and more. The last quiz is about how dangerous sharks are and talks about how conservationists are trying to save sharks. There are suggestions for reading critically and a few additional books (one from the 1980s) and websites to check out.

Verdict: This is funny and informative. It's definitely a quick browsing book and would be great for collections that need more high-level easy readers or low-level nonfiction for kids' reading pleasure.
