This large format board book includes generous flaps and cheerful, brisk rhymes. Each spread shows a smiling animal against a solid block of color. On the left page is a rhyme asking what the animal does, set against a colorful background with a pattern of lighter pastel dots. "Do sharks stamp?/Do sharks stomp?/All I know is/sharks go..."
When you lift the large flap covering the animal's mouth, the matching word is revealed. For the shark it is, of course, "Chomp!" Not all the rhymes or actions make sense - a gull's sound is described as "caw" and there seems to be a missing plural in the polar bear rhyme, "All I know is polar bear go..." The book also has hippos growling with is not a sound I've ever heard of them making.
The final spread opens out two nearly full-page gatefolds to reveal all the animals underwater making their sounds. The gull has its head ducked under the surface to say "caw" and the crab is snapping its claws.
The book is almost 10 inches square and the binding is a fairly thing paper over board. The flaps themselves are cardstock, but could be reinforced.
Verdict: While unlikely to last long, and the inaccurate sounds will annoy some sticklers (like me) small children who love lift-the-flaps and making sounds will adore this cheerful book and it will make an amusing addition to most board book collections.
