Small Readers: Look at Rollo! by Reed Duncan, illustrated by Keith Frawley

I missed more Rollo books! I read the first two as review copies from Penguin and then, other than recommending them to kids, kind of forgot about them. When I saw there was a new one out, I remembered how fun they were - and discovered there was a third that I missed!

Rollo, a slobbery, fun-loving bulldog and his curly-haired boy have a series of messy adventures in this latest collection of their antics. From the time he gets up, to their journey to the park, and back home in the evening, Rollo slobbers, snores, and splashes his way through the day. Despite his messy behavior (and copious amounts of drool) his boy loves him just the way he is!

This is more picture book than easy reader, with a slightly larger format than the traditional easy reader and a single line or two of medium size text on each full-color illustrated spread. There are humorous details, like the fish looking disgusted after Rollo takes a bath in their pond, and the boy's expression is often chagrined or exasperated, but always loving.

Verdict: Not a necessary purchase perhaps, but sure to delight dog-loving intermediate readers everywhere!
