As Tony bounces along the road, disaster after disaster strikes and Pop! Bing! Boing! Boom! he loses wheels left and right. From green slime to aliens, villains to cracks, every disaster sends another wheel flying. Staake's rainbow-colored people whiz around in colorful cars, with giant Tony bounding across the pages. It's a colorful, silly, and exciting landscape, matched by Stein's brisk rhymes, that include a nice iteration of subtraction, "9 wheels gone! 9 wheels left!/But Tony never stopped./On he went, a charging truck/that wobbled, waved, and hopped!"
There's plenty of little humorous touches, from the band-aids Tony mysteriously acquires to the quasi-bathroom humor at the end and the surprising nature of his load.
Verdict: Sure to be a storytime favorite, librarians will definitely want to add this to their storytime and vehicle collections, as well as recommending it to parents and teachers who want to introduce the concept of subtraction.
