Animals: Here we grow! by Shelley Rotner

Rotner is the natural successor to Tana Hoban, creating fun and informative photo stories that focus on kids and their everyday lives.

Her latest book includes not only adorable photographs of baby animals, but crystal-clear sequences of how living things grow. There are a lot of oviparous animal sequences - butterflies, frogs, lizards, and birds. Fluffy bunnies (the initial pink rat stage is skipped), and a variety of traditional farm animals. The last spread shows a dark-haired, light-skinned baby growing into a young child in a flowered dress. There are several additional photographs of children holding animals, with a range of races shown.

Back matter shows three sample life cycles, thumbnails identifying the exact species or breed of animal, and a simple glossary. The text itself is simple too, with phrases like "Egg to hatchling to turtle." It's not a narrative so much as a story that inspires dialogue, and it would be fun to read this with kids and then draw or create their own life cycles, or to have this as reference in a school unit.

Verdict: Perfect for storytimes or school use, this is a cheerful and adorable collection of photographs that do an excellent job of showing the basic life cycle of a variety of animals. Recommended.
