Early Readers: Sabrina Sue loves the sea by Priscilla Burris

Sabrina Sue, a cheerful white chicken with a red top-knot, is obsessed with the idea of the sea. She imagines how beautiful it would be, how blue, how refreshing. The other animals jeer at her, but she determines to live her dream and sneaks away in Farmer Marsha's truck.

After a long journey, she and her frog friend arrive at the beach. They thoroughly enjoy the wonders and beauties of the ocean before returning home to share their memories with the other farm animals.

There's no commentary on the other animals calling her silly and foolish, only Sabrina Sue's reflection that she doesn't mind being silly and foolish sometimes, as she remembers fun she's had with her frog friend in the past. Burris' soft lines and cheerful primary colors show a tidy farmyard with a few simple farm animal representatives, a journey along a busy road and through a green forest, and a solitary beach. Blues are the predominant color throughout the story, from the blue of the sky and the farm pond to the deep blue of the sea.

This is a Ready-to-Read title, so they follow their own leveling system. I've listened to webinars explaining this, but honestly I find it frustrating that they don't include any equivalent to the more widely-used leveling systems available. My audience primarily uses F&P, with lexiles in the upper grades, so this means I have to dig around to check the level of the book before labeling it. I gave this one a red sticker, putting it in the beginning range that covers D-H in F&P. The text is simple and bold, with short sentences and limited vocabulary.

Verdict: This is a sweet and upbeat early reader that makes a good filler for emerging readers practicing their beginning language skills.
