I really liked Stadelmann's contributions to the Branches series, Olive and Beatrix, and was always sad there were only two titles. So I was thrilled that she's started a new graphic beginning chapter series with a similar blend of science and magic - not to mention mystery!
Readers are introduced to Paige as she moves, with her dads, to Evergreen Street "where the trees are all twisted." Paige loves to collect facts and sets out to investigate her new home. She runs into a boy named Penn, who is very chatty and happy to show her around the street. But when he tells Paige Evergreen Street is home to a monster, Paige has to get the facts!
As she investigates the "proof" Penn offers of the monster's existence, she collects facts, looks for evidence, and meets the unique, diverse residents of the street. In the end, she and Penn come to different conclusions although they examined the same evidence, but one thing they can agree on - they are both friends!
This beginning chapter is a blend of illustrations, text, graphic panels, and speech balloons. There are lots of greens and purples in the art, from hair colors to the street during the day and at night during the full moon festival. Pages from Paige's notebook are included, with little sketches, clues, and notes.
Verdict: This is a delightful new series starter, perfect for readers who enjoy mysteries and the Branches books. I look forward to introducing it to my beginning chapter readers. Recommended.
