Read, Read, Read, said the Baby: Odd Beasts by Laura Gehl, illustrated by Gareth Lucas
A single sentence on each page, making up rhyming couplets, illustrates a number of “weird” animals in this nonfiction board book. It features a pangolin, sunfish, bush baby, and others. The final page of the story shows a thumbnail collection of the eight featured animals with the words, “But anywhere you go,/a forest or the zoo,/the animals might think/the weirdest one is.../you!”
The last two spreads of the book show photographs of the animals with a paragraph about their unique features.
Lucas’ illustrations are colorful but not vibrant and they emphasize the various features, like the spider’s horns or the bush baby’s eyes. My own preference is for photographs, but the combination is a nice choice and this should interest young children who like animals as well as adults tired of reading the same old board book fare.
Verdict: An additional purchase where weird animal books are popular.
