Starla Jean: Which came first: The chicken or the friendship? by Elana K. Arnold, illustrated by A. N. Kang

This quirky beginning chapter book introduces Starla Jean, her family, and her new best friend: a chicken!

Starla Jean, a white girl with sleek dark brown hair and her father bike to the park in their small town. There are rolling hills of green and a brick bridge, accompanied by rows of older looking brick townhouses. Along the way they say hello to various neighbors, finally arriving at the park. There Starla Jean discovers a chicken and her dad jokingly says she can keep it if she can catch it.

Of course, she catches it! A humorous story of chicken adventures, including teaching her baby sister Willa her first word (Bawk!) Eventually, having named and tamed the chicken, her parents become used to it and Opal Egg is now a part of the family.

Starla Jean's family, and the two neighbors pictured, are all white. Kang's delicate illustrations, heavy on blue with bright red accents, are adorable and this quirky, humorous story will attract readers who like realistic stories and animals.

Verdict: A nice addition to illustrated beginning chapter collections.

I believe the mom could be mixed white and Asian. As could Starla Jean
