Sheneman, a well-known cartoonist, started his career in children’s books with two funny fictional offerings, Nope! and Don’t eat that! In 2020 he branched out into nonfiction with Dinosaurs are not extinct, and a new funny nonfiction writer was born. His fourth book, The Goldilocks Zone, tackles the same concept that’s been dealt with in other titles, like Just Right by Manley Curtis, but with his own humorous twist, and the inclusion of characters from the folktale, the book branches out into an exploration of the planets, the wonders of earth, and the science of what supports life.
This isn’t a storytime read-aloud; the text is fairly dense, although livened by humorous comments and speech bubbles from Goldilocks and Baby Bear, and the concepts, presented simply and clearly, are too complex for most preschoolers to grasp. However, it’s the perfect story to read to a classroom of 1st or 2nd graders or to get older kids started on a planetary research unit.
Verdict: Funny, informative, and with lively illustrations, this is perfect for readers thirsting for information about outer space and for teachers looking for a new, snazzy presentation. Recommended for most libraries.
