Shark Chums: Can Clam Go? By Adam Lehrhaupt, illustrated by Pauline Gregory

Adam Lehrhaupt’s humor has produced many popular picture books and now he has branched out into early leveled readers.

Shark, a pudgy blue and white character with a toothy grin, can go fast. She zips across the page, flipping upside down and showing off her fancy moves. But what about Clam? They just sit on the reef, sadly watching Shark go zipping past. When Shark approaches Clam, it seems like the worst is about to happen... but a surprising twist turns the two into best friends, go-go-going along together.

Gregory's cartoon illustrations contrast the graceful shark with Clam, shown as a red and pink shell with expressive eyes, who watches sadly as Shark and the other fish show off their swimming skills. When Shark finds a solution, Clam has a grin as wide as the toothy fish as they zip and zoom together.

Ready-to-Read has its own reading levels (personally, I wish we could either dump all levels or pick one system and one only, but that's another argument) but this is a fairly simple early reader short sentences of two or three words and a large, bold font.

Verdict: I'm always looking for low-level early readers, and kids definitely prefer the funny ones. This is sure to be a hit for readers who like Jonathan Fenske and other stories. Recommended.
