Expedition Backyard by Rosemary Mosco, illustrated by Binglin Hu
Rosemary Mosco has produced a fascinating variety of books in the past few years, all related in some way to the natural world, but in a range of formats from picture books to adult nonfiction. Her latest is a graphic novel for young readers and Binglin Hu’s art is a perfect match for Mosco’s writing, even bearing some resemblance to Mosco’s own comic style.
Mole is a stay-at home creature, but she’s always up to try something new, which is good because her best friend Vole likes to live life on the wild side! The two have many adventures in the forest they live in, but one rainy day when they’re watching nature shows in a nearby cabin they accidentally get packed and find themselves in the city! While the two cautiously explore their new surroundings and discover the dangers, delights, and natural wonders that exist in an urban landscape, their journey is mimicked by the journey of the Black family who has moved to the city and glimpses of the little girl finding new friends and learning to appreciate that nature is everywhere, in the country and the city.
Notes from Mole, Vole, and their new city friends give ideas for activities, ways to help city and country critters, and other interesting activities. I loved that both Mole and Vole use female pronouns, and instead of defaulting to male pronouns, other animals, like a hawk, are referenced as “it.” There an additional aspect to the story as Mole and Vole deepen their friendship and learn to compromise their very different personalities.
Verdict: This is a must-have story, not only for its cute storyline and interesting information on city wildlife, but also for its inclusive depiction of animals and humans and charming depiction of nature.
