Boop! by Bea Birdsong, illustrated by Linzie Hunter

THE CUTENESS!! Ok, this book is just soooo adorable. First, it starts with a reminder to all "Boopers" that although the dogs in this book all want their snoots booped, you always have to ask before touching a real dog! Excellent advice to start the story. Now let the booping begin!

The first spread shows a smiling yellow dog, with a simple curve of a floppy ear, and colorful speech balloons and text in red, white, blue and black, identifying the snoot that needs to be booped. The next page explains more about a boop and shows a brown hand, finger extended. On the following page, the snoot is booped! "You booped the snoot! Clap hands! Hooray! And now the tail will swish and sway!"

The book continues with Seuss-style rhymes, a plethora of dogs of all breeds, shapes, and sizes, and lots of booping. Readers are encouraged to boop the "floofiest" and "smooshiest" snoots, so there's room conversation and comparison. Just when it seems every snoot has been booped, it turns out there's one left - your own! Time to boop your snoot!

Verdict: There are a lot of amazing picture books being published, but there is a distinct lack of books designed for storytime and aimed at younger toddlers and preschoolers. This one is ideal, especially for small groups that can come up and boop the snoots on the dogs in the book. If you have a larger group, encourage them to take turns, turn it into a flannelboard, or distribute simple paper puppets to boop. Sure to be a storytime hit. Highly recommended.
