Legendarios: Wrath of the rain god by Karla Arenas Valenti, illustrated by Vanessa Morales

Nine year old twins Emma and Martin have never agreed on anything - until their parents decide to move from beautiful Cuernavaca, Mexico, to Chicago, USA, which they both agree is a terrible idea. Both are sad to leave their Abuela, although she gives them a mysterious book of legends, and a special gift each, to take along with them.

When they arrive in Chicago, the dingy house, where they will have to share a room, the news that all their stuff has been stopped at the border, and the ugliness of the city make them sure that things can't possibly be worse. Both are shocked when they discover their Abuela's gift has mysteriously accompanied them and when they open it, they are transported to the land of the Aztecs, where Tlaloc, the rain god, has caused catastrophic floods. Using their special gifts, and joining up with Nelli, a young Aztec girl, the three go on a mission to discover what's angering Tlaloc and resolve the situation. It will take both Emma's love of mysteries and Martin's interest in animals to get everyone back home safe - and when they do arrive home, the house doesn't look so small and dingy anymore. Emma and Martin have learned to work together, some of the time anyways, and they can't wait to dive into another legend in their book of tales.

Black and white illustrations are scattered throughout the book, as are Spanish and Nahuatl words. There is a glossary and translation in the back.

Verdict: This is a delightful addition to beginning chapter fantasies. It's full of adventure and humor, a great read-alike for Magic Tree House fans, and features Mexican-American kids. A must-have for every library with a beginning chapter collection. Strongly recommended.
