The cover is heavily embossed with a variety of shiny ladybugs and golden beetles. The endpages are covered with a cheerful procession of red ants carrying leaves. Each spread explores a different type of bug or aspect of bugs. The first few explain and define bugs, insects, and arachnids. There are spreads on prehistoric bugs, bug homes from underwater to underground, camouflage, reproduction, and pages devoted to special bugs like Madagascan sunset moths.
Teckentrup's colorful art dances across the pages, showing bugs in all their beauty and intricacy. The text is not always easy to read, often being placed on dark blue or green backgrounds and being a small font, but since I'd say this is primarily a browsing book that's fine.
There are also special bugs to seek and find, and a final page mentioning some of the interactions between bugs and people from food to pets, as well as suggestions for a few activities with bugs.
Verdict: While not a necessary purchase, and the difficulty of finding it may be a barrier, this is a lovely and enjoyable book for bug fans of all ages.
