Cranky Chicken by Katherine Battersby

Battersby, author of a handful of delightful picture books (Squish Rabbit is a toddler favorite for us) branches out into a beginning chapter graphic novel with hilarious results.

Cranky Chicken, shown on the endpages in an endless variety of cranky attitudes, is, well, cranky. Chicken stomps along, grumbling and growling, until they meet… a worm. The worm’s name is Speedy and they are not only fast, they are cheerful and optimistic, and just… ugh. Chicken can’t stand them. But maybe what Chicken really needs is… a friend? And maybe Speedy isn’t as experienced on the friend front as they would like to pretend…

In three short chapters, interspersed with hilarious comics about Chicken and Speedy, showing them wearing a variety of “cranky pants,” crossing the road, etc. the classic odd couple friendship is developed but with Battersby’s own unique twist. Every kid knows what it’s like to feel cranky sometimes - as well as wiggly just like Speedy! Battersby’s thick, blurred lines, with pale blue backgrounds and red accents, make for an attractive story. Simple panels and easy-to-follow text, with a bold, reader-friendly font, will make this a charming addition to the growing catalog of beginning reader graphic novels.

Verdict: Chickens are always funny, and this lighthearted book about feelings and friendship will tickle children and adults alike. Recommended.
