A peek at beaks: Tools birds use by Sara Levine, illustrated by Kate Slater

There have been quite a few books about bird beaks, but this one incorporates a fun guessing game that makes it unique. Readers see a silhouette of a bird with its beak in the shape of an implement like scissors or a net. They are asked to guess what kind of bird has this type of beak, then turn the page to find the answer. Additional information about the bird or family of birds is included on each page.

The last page suggests readers make shadow puppets of bird beaks, similar to the silhouettes they’ve seen on the pages. There is no back matter.

This would be an easy title to incorporate into a STEM program, building different types of bird beaks for different purposes. The splashy art will also inspire readers to create their own real or imaginary birds and beaks.

Verdict: A strong addition to animal nonfiction picture books with several aspects that make it stand out from previous titles on this subject. Recommended for most collections.
