Protagonists: Black, female
Reading level: 330-430
Series: Currently 3 titles, with the last published in December 2022
To be shifted to transitional chapters
Review: Ace, a Black girl with an explosion of purple curls, takes off in a sparkly purple race car in this simple early reader.
Acorn is Scholastic early reader imprint, creating books that are one step below their Branches series but in a small chapter book format. They are nicely sized for kids to feel they are reading a "real" chapter book, but simple enough for readers who can handle traditional titles like Frog and Toad. In fact, some of the Acorn titles are published early readers like Rylant's Poppleton.
This cheerful story shows Ace building her car, continuing despite setbacks, and eventually winning the race.
Verdict: The simple text will be attractive to young children ready for more challenging books and this is a nice addition to the Acorn family, with a touch of diversity in the Black, female driver.
