Bear and Bird: The picnic and other stories by Jarvis

Jarvis has created many delightful picture books and now he's branching out into his first chapter book. It's a classic odd-couple friendship, a la Frog and Toad, but with Jarvis' own gentle humor and soft palette of colors.

In four chapters the friends explore their relationship; first Bird gets lost in a flower, much to Bear's worry and bewilderment. Then they go on a picnic and Bear, panicking that he has forgotten everything, makes up excuses which Bird pretends to believe. Bird proclaims she is the best at painting, but everyone prefers Bear's masterpieces - except Bear! And the last story focuses on the joys of a cozy blanket and a good friend.

There's a distinct tendency in these odd-couple friendships for the characters to mirror sometimes ridiculously poor social-emotional skills, not to mention toxic friendships. Jarvis comes close to this line, especially in the second chapter, "The Picnic" where Bird accepts Bear's excuses and lies, rather than make him feel bad or talking honestly together. In the next chapter, again lies to Bird, saying he loves her artwork "Bear didn't really like the painting. I mean, look at it." but gets his comeuppance when she promises to paint more for him, "One for every corner of your house!"

Jarvis' art is a favorite of mine, and I enjoyed the simple circles that make up the characters and the splashy colors that dot the pages as flowers, leaves, and other items. This is not exactly a beginning chapter or an easy reader; it's best-suited as a read-aloud, especially so that caregivers can discuss how Bear and Bird could be more honest with each other!

Verdict: If you are looking for more gentle read-alouds and have fans of the classic Frog and Toad model, this will be popular. Jarvis has a subtle sense of humor that not all kids will get, but adults will enjoy the dry irony of his voice and, compared to some books, the messaging of silencing yourself to make a friend feel better is not too extreme.
