The Princess in Black and the Kitty Catastrophe by Shannon and Dean Hale; illustrated by LeUyen Pham

The Princess in Black debuted in 2014 and quickly became a firm favorite with readers of all ages and genders. At the castle, Magnolia is a "typical" princess, dressed in fluffy pink with an adorable dimple in her plump chin. She's accompanied by her elegant black unicorn, Frimplepants. But when the monster alarm rings, she turns into The Princess in Black, along with her pony Blackie, and they fight monsters, save princes and princesses, and inspire other heroes.

At this point she's had many adventures, solving different problems with both her princess moves "TWINKLE TWINKLE LITTLE SMASH" as well as using negotiation skills and talking people (and monsters) through their feelings.

In her latest adventure, Duchess Wigtower has acquired an adorably fluffy white cat. Just one problem... the cat is destructive! She sneaks the cat onto Magnolia's doorstep and the princess is thrilled with this adorable kitten. She reads up on everything it needs and sets about playing with it and naming it... but she keeps getting interrupted by the monster bell! Every time she goes away and returns, the cat has destroyed something else! Will the princess ever figure out what this cranky kitten - and an equally fussy monster - really want?

Verdict: This series is just as fresh and fun as when the first book was released. The addition of a new character is delightful and while you might expect the formula to get repetitive, the Hales always come up with a new twist - playing games with a monster and adding a cat to the line-up of heroes in this volume. This is a good time to make sure you have the complete series when you add the latest title to your collection.
