Introduction

I reminded everyone that this was messy and gave some basic instructions, emphasizing using small dots of ink and not dumping it in.

How it works

• Kids use the paintbrushes to tap, paint, drip, or splatter ink into the tubs, which are filled with about two inches of water. Then they drop the paper or muslin in, peel it out, and it transfers the design to the item.
• The main effort involved in this is my staff emptying and refilling the water tubs and labeling and moving the marbled art out to dry.

Project: Sticker resist

• How it works
• The kids are supposed to put stickers on the paper, paint with watercolors, then remove the stickers to leave a shape. It never works quite like I want it to - I think I need better paper and/or stickers.

How it works
I showed the kids how they could draw a design with the pastel crayon, then paint over it in watercolor and it would repel the paint and stand out. I also showed them how to blend pastels. They made a lot of cool things!

Project: Embossing foil pendants

I got this idea from Make and Takes. We pretty much did it exactly as it said and it was very popular.

• Paint cups (tempera and biocolor) and brushes
• Paper towels, heat tool
• Cardboard (squares left from a different program)

How it works

• Show kids how to fan fold the paper, encourage them to paint lightly. Blot dry with paper towels or use the heat tool (it's basically an extra hot hair-dryer).
• When their pieces are dry, they can glue them to the cardboard to create collages
